Assignment 2 Report

1.     Introduction

The application is designed to simulate a fireman putting out a fire. Because firemen are usually faced with very dangerous scenarios, through the simulation training of this application, training costs can be greatly reduced.

2.     Description of the application

This app shows a wooden box on fire with a fire extinguisher next to it. The fire can be extinguished by the use of fire extinguishers. The fire was not completely extinguished until the sound of the flame died down. It simulates what it would be like for a firefighter to quickly deal with a flame in a crisis situation. Firefighting is a very dangerous occupation, for this profession, every work has to risk the risk of loss of life. But they have to train continuously to complete the fire extinguishing task safely and quickly every time. And the usual training does not carry out dangerous simulation, otherwise there will be a certain risk. So there needs to be a safe way to train in emergency situations. This application can simulate this kind of training very well. In addition, this application uses VR technology, which allows users to more immersive simulation of the fire fighting scene, increasing the sense of engagement, and more simulation.

3.     Interaction Design

First of all, the player has an interaction with the fire extinguisher, through the two trigger buttons of the controller can respectively grab the fire extinguisher and let the fire extinguisher spray. Then the player picks up the fire extinguisher and can spray water on the box that is on fire in front of him. When water comes into contact with a burning wooden box, it triggers a particle effect of smoke.

Here's a storyboard:

John was a new firefighter, and he hadn't had much experience with fire before. Most of the previous learning is theoretical knowledge, little practice is only a relatively small flame. The fire department let him use the app to test. John found that he had a psychological fear of real large flames, and when he used the software for the first time, he just stopped spraying water when saw the flame disappear. In fact, the flame was not completely extinguished, and there was still the sound of the flame burning. So his test result was judged as failing. For a period of time later, John used the app to practice overcoming his fears and fighting fires. By the time of the next assessment, John had successfully completed all the operations of the application, including continuing to extinguish the fire until the flame completely dissipated, and he had also overcome his fear of flames, proving that he could extinguish the fire under high pressure.

4.     Technical Development

When a fire extinguisher sprays water, it has a spherical range. The box is set to a value, and when the spray range touches the burning box, this value will continue to decrease until it reaches 0 and the flame will completely disappear and stop the sound of the flame. The hardware used in the application is Oculus quest, and all the scripts used in human-computer interaction are implemented using the code of oculus assets in the unity store, so the use of oculus hardware can achieve a perfect interactive experience.

5.     Descriptions of 3D Models

The application consists of two 3D models.

The first model is a fire extinguisher that the player can control, a very common item that allows the player to quickly understand how to use it without the need for instructions.

The second model is a wooden box, because the wooden box is a very common flammable material in real life, as a firefighter will encounter similar targets many times in the future work.
